We are currently looking for an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist for our Wabush, Newfoundland and Labrador regions. 


Reports to: National Manager, EHS 

Secondary Matrix Manager: Regional Manager, Eastern Canada 

Shift: 5 x 2

Location: Wabush, NL 

Relocation: This position does not offer relocation 


  • Provide EHS support to the Eastern Canada Operations - Wabush, Newfoundland & Labrador and Goderich, Ontario.
  • Ensures compliance to OH&S laws, regulations and standards. Provide support and advice to all levels within the organization regarding OH&S Act, Code and Regulation and other applicable legislation as required.
  • Drives and supports the Incident Management process. Recommend corrective and preventive actions. Track implementation success.
  • Lead and assist in the Risk Management process within the operation (Risk Assessments, Job Hazard Analysis).
  • Promote and drive the use of diverse safety tools (FLRA’s, Safety Inspections & Observations, Near Hits and Hazard Id’s).
  • Monitor all injury and illness incidents and assist with the organizations Worker’s Compensation management efforts to effectively reduce costs and other associated negative outcomes (recordability, restricted and/or lost workday classifications), while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. Constantly review the Incident Summary; manage claims, complete Employer’s Reports.
  • Attend and prepare safety meetings and actively participate in work planning processes.
    Monitor safety performance across the operation, analyze stats & trends, and support business management in the development of action plans to improve performance to meet and exceed goals.
  • Be accessible to various levels within the organization as an impartial resource for environmental, health and safety concerns.
  • Assist and support the business by monitoring the safety performance of contractors that are performing hands on work within our operation.


  • Develop and implement training material and EHS policies. Train employees on general / basic safety related subjects.
  • Provide safety orientation to all new hires. Discuss Komatsu’s best practices, EHS’s vision and principles, cardinal safety rules, stop work obligation protocol, and commitment to zero harm.
  • Lead programs and site internal audits, provide instruction and assistance to operations and EHS personnel on issues identification, implementation of corrective actions.
  • Ensure environmental compliance with solid and hazardous waste, air emissions, and water quality regulatory requirements, and drive pollution prevention initiatives that help reduce operating costs.
  • Support corporate monitoring, record keeping, and reporting initiatives to effectively demonstrate compliance with external regulatory requirements and company best practices.
  • Responsible of safety related databases (Safety record spreadsheet, Incident Database, Contractor Qualification Databases).
  • Record and monitor employee safety tickets and expiry dates. Schedule employees for safety training with recognized vendors to ensure compliancy with customer requirements and EHS best practices.
  • Schedule drug and alcohol testing for worksite pre access, post incident, and reasonable suspicion. Communicate with Medical Review Officers and Human Resources regarding non-negative test results.
  • Be the advisor of the EHS Committee.
  • Must be willing to travel within Canada & US up to 20 % to our active sites and regional offices.
  • Other EHS related duties, as assigned.

Skill & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years practical EHS experience in the mining industry, heavy industrial, manufacturing or mining sectors with increasing role and responsibilities.
  • NCSO or similar designation. Occupational Health and Safety Certificate is an asset. 
  • Demonstrated experience and a working knowledge of: OH&S legislation, WHMIS, emergency response planning, Lock Out-Tag Out, Fall Protection, Confined Spaces, risk and hazard assessments, incident investigations, basic and specialized personal protective equipment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of all Federal / Provincial, OH&S regulations and standards as they relate to General Industry and Mining operations (OSHA, MSHA, DOT, ECO Canada, DNR, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Workers’ Compensation Claims administration and management best practices.
  • Capable of maintaining accountability with numerous entities and cultivating those relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
  • Up to date Safety tickets: WHIMIS, Confined Space, Fall Protection and First Aid are an asset. 
  • Valid Driver’s license with no limitations.
  • Must have no restrictions for access to any mine site. 
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, individual and team-based settings.
  • Demonstrated communication, reporting and leadership team skills are essential.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, adaptable and flexible.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
  • Capable of Public Speaking.
  • Ability to manage a wide range of work assignments and changing priorities.
  • A combination of Field and Industrial experience is required.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams), internet and data base experience.
  • Project management skills/experience an asset.
