Job Purpose

As a leader in Komatsu’s UX Design team, you will drive success in the entire design process of creating “an exemplary user experience that meets the exact needs of the customer, without fuss or bother.” You will guide teams in diving deep into the user environment to help teams understand, categorize, prioritize, and document user behavior and stakeholder requirements. 

With that understanding, you’ll design useful, usable, and desirable solutions, lead a team of designers, spearhead design system activities, and expand your abilities as a design leader. Your expertise in UX design best practices and collaboration with business partners at all levels will expand design maturity and build a strong human-centered design culture.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Each day will present you with new challenges and opportunities to test and grow your skills. As a UX Design Supervisor with Komatsu, you’ll be responsible to:

  • Lead and supervise a design team in UX activities such as user research, design iterations, user testing, and documentation
  • Optimize design tools and methodologies to inspire designers and evangelize exceptional UX processes and approaches at all levels of the business
  • Manage a design team in developing UX project plans and backlogs that include critical design activities and follow process best practices
  • Mentor senior designers and help refine UX practices across teams
  • Coordinate with product and development managers to translate design concepts into productized user interfaces that enhance the user experience
  • Develop and drive UI best practices and principles in areas like psychology, usability, learnability, controllability, localization, and internationalization
  • Collaborate with executive teams to ensure UX strategies align with business goals
  • Lead cross-platform UX framework development and ensure UX executional alignment in both internal and external design teams
  • Support companywide UX initiatives and UX business strategy with assistance from the UX Design Manager 

Required Skills

  • Degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, or similar
  • 7+ years of experience as a UX, Product or Interaction Designer
  • 2+ years of experience leading a design team
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and storytelling skills
  • Enthusiasm leading and coaching designers
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Expert in leading user research, user testing planning, execution, and analysis
  • Expert in design software like Figma or similar tools
  • Experience defining company UX design strategy, processes, and best practices
  • Proficient in task management tools like Aha, Azure, Jira, or similar

Desired Skills

  • Experience leading human-centered design initiatives
  • Intimate knowledge of design system creation and management
  • Business-minded enough to communicate with executive leaders
  • Strong desire to learn new skills and open to receiving feedback
  • Strong knowledge of Accessibility and Human Factors principles
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies
  • Experience designing for high-risk environments
  • Speak 2 or more languages
