Job Overview

This position requires candidates to be well rounded in off-highway product development practices with a history of current product support to complement the direction provided to team members.  A qualified candidate should function well in a team environment with the ability to effectively communicate technical concerns, identify potential issues, de-escalate tense communications and aid in the solution process. The following are key job responsibilities and requirements.

 

Key Job Responsibilities

Project design responsibility for planning, organizing, and leading the development and/or maintenance of off highway vehicle systems and structures. Create and maintain junior engineers design schedules to meet Quality, Cost and Delivery.

  • Provide technical leadership to coach and develop subordinate engineers by providing development direction and independently evaluating designs to meet targets established for the projects. Demonstrate a high degree of creativity and mature judgment in anticipating and solving non-reoccurring, unprecedented problems realized during reviews, utilizing respective supporting engineering technical documentation such as Komatsu Engineering Standards (KES) and ISO Standards, etc.
  • Communicate effectively; write clear concise memo’s including drafts of technical documentation such as Parts and Service News PSN, Operation Manuals OM, and Shop Manuals. Discuss, negotiate and resolve specification issues with Manufacturing and Suppliers during prototype development and series production. Submit technical documents for Liaison Studies, Quality Confirmation Check Sheets and Trip Reports to ensure that customer requirements are met, and targets achieved.
  • Establish and maintain open communications with internal and external customers and suppliers and provide technical support to meet their expectations (i.e. Manufacturing, Parts, QA, Service, Sales, Marketing, Publications, customers, vendors, management, and other Engineering groups).
  • Coach and develop junior engineers; provide employee performance information to the Chief Engineer and/or Engineering Manager for continuous employee development identifying strengths and weaknesses that can be utilized and/or improved upon.  Establish, monitor, and review junior engineer yearly, monthly and weekly goals. Instill a sense of ownership and pride in subordinates to motivate them to meet or exceed their technical objectives and schedules.
  • Promote continuous improvement of off highway vehicles and systems, ensure that past failures are not incorporated into new designs. Assist in the establishment of criteria for the development of new product. Understand competitive equipment features, performance, the cost of operation and overhaul life, etc..."
  • Comprehensive understanding of machine sales and development sales code configurations providing the outline of developments for tasking and costing. Knowledge of the internal customer usage for publications, marketing, manufacturing, accounting, etc...

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BS Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical or General) and minimum of 10 years accomplished experience in the design of related products.
  • Proficiency in engineering principles including but not limited to structural mechanics, hydraulics, heat transfer, electricity, ergonomics, 3D/2D CAD and data management.
  • Proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook and Teams as a minimum with a solid working knowledge of applications such as 2D/3D CAD (Creo, Solid Works, AutoCAD).
  • Use and understanding of engineering standards like KES (Komatsu Engineering Standards), ISO standards and SAE standards is essential.  Komatsu engineering standards will complement and enhance on industry standards where applicable with a long history of off highway mobile equipment development and experiences driving the creation of such internal standards. Knowledge of typical engineering standards in drawing practice, dimensioning and tolerancing, drawing symbols, welding practice, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including international travel.
