Job Purpose

The Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) is a comprehensive fleet management system for mines. The autonomous trucks are centrally controlled through a wireless network that integrates on-board vehicle controllers, high precision global positioning, and obstacle avoidance systems. The AHS Product Development team is responsible for building innovative solutions to unique and challenging autonomous operation problems. Working with our partners around the world, you will help design and support the next generation of mine optimization technologies and build the future platforms that will drive the changes in the mining industry for generations. 

As a Software Engineer I – AHS, you will work as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team to design, develop, test, and deliver reliable software for Komatsu’s world-leading autonomous haulage system. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers, contribute to meaningful projects, and grow your technical and professional skills. 

This role is ideal for a motivated early-career engineer who thrives in a learning environment and is eager to develop a strong foundation in software engineering for real-world, mission-critical systems. 

Key job responsibilities

  • Participate in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software services supporting AHS functionality such as route planning, machine coordination, and system health monitoring.
  • Work closely with senior engineers to understand product requirements and contribute to implementation details under guidance.
  • Collaborate with QA and operations teams to validate and deploy software updates.
  • Contribute to improving documentation, automation, and internal tools.
  • Proactively learn new technologies, frameworks, and best practices in software engineering.
  • Occasionally travel internationally to collaborate with global Komatsu teams and partners.
  • Write clear, maintainable, and efficient code following established patterns and engineering practices. Participate in peer code reviews and incorporate feedback to improve code quality and maintainability. Support troubleshooting, debugging, and performance analysis activities. 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1–2 years of professional software development experience (including internships, co-op, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in at least one object-oriented programming language (Java preferred).
  • Understanding of core software development concepts including algorithms, data structures, and design patterns.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and build tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative team mindset.
  • Advanced English (written and verbal) for global team collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with microservices or distributed systems.
  • Exposure to RESTful APIs or event-driven architectures.
  • Familiarity with automated testing tools and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Interest in robotics, embedded systems, or autonomous vehicle software.emonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and apply them effectively.
