Job Overview

Responsible for planning, scheduling, and completing general assignments, as well as leading design teams on major projects for vehicle chassis, and/or components, and/or systems. To develop design concepts and associated documentation to support the manufacture and support of products. Assure design compliance to Engineering Standards, product quality and product cost. Interface with other Komatsu Engineering groups and suppliers as required for exchange of technical information. Provide technical support to Manufacturing for vehicle build issues, Marketing plus Sales for vehicle sales issues, and Service, QA, and Parts for customer issues. Visit customer sites for resolution of product issues, promotion of sales, maintaining knowledge of mine environment, and understanding customer expectations. Provide leadership to subordinate Engineers for developing engineering drawings and technical information.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Utilize CAD and PC Programs to develop project plan and to develop design concept drawing, complete assembly drawing, complete component drawing, and complete system drawing for respective vehicle chassis, and/or component, and/or system plus BOM supporting technical information. Development to meet design compliance to Engineering Standards, Product Quality, Product Cost, and Development Schedule.
  • Apply a comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge of the field experience to the development of new methods, approaches, or procedures with quality and cost effectiveness as a key issue.
  • Provide technical leadership in completing assignments and projects. Demonstrate a high degree of creativity and mature judgement in anticipating and solving non-reoccurring, unprecedented problems.
  • Assume project responsibility on assignments by providing planning, technical guidance, and coordination with inside and outside functions, as required to complete the assignment to plan and schedule.
  • Maintain open communications with internal and external customers and suppliers and provide technical support to meet their expectations (i.e. Manufacturing, Parts, QA, Service, Sales, Marketing, customers, vendors, management, and other Engineering groups).
  • Initiate and monitor appropriate product testing programs, both in-plant and in the field.
  • Remain current in knowledge of CAD and PC Programs utilized to complete assignments in order to produce timely and accurate results.
  • Contribute to developing and motivating department personnel.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BS Degree or higher in Engineering or related technical field from an accredited university with at least 5 years of work experience in the design of related products. OR 
    • Associates degree in a technical field with at least 10 years of work experience in the design of related products.  OR 
    • 15 years of work experience in the design of related products.
  • Strong familiarity with off-highway mobile equipment and application.
  • Must have good mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • Must be open-minded and imaginative and not controlled by paradigms.
  • Must have good leadership skills and good communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of CAD and/or PC Programs for design function.
  • Good knowledge of analytical and testing methods and procedures.
  • Good working knowledge of failure and root cause analysis. 
  • Current Products - Appropriate knowledge in the fields of structural design and testing, Finite Element Analysis, CAD systems, hydraulics, electrical and electronic control systems, operator ergonomics, ISO and MSHA regulations, and recommended practices.
