Job Overview

Responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising Design Engineering assignments including major projects for vehicle chassis, and/or components, and/or systems.

 

Development to meet design compliance to Engineering Standards, product quality and product cost.  Interface with other Komatsu Engineering groups and suppliers as required for exchange of technical information.

 

Provide technical support to Manufacturing for vehicle build issues, Marketing plus Sales for vehicle sales issues, and Service plus Parts for customer issues.

 

Visit customer sites for resolution of product issues, promotion of sales, maintaining knowledge of mine environment, and understanding customer expectations.

 

Provide leadership to subordinate Engineers for developing engineering drawings and technical information.

 

Scope

 

Develop Electrical, Electronic Hardware, plus technical information for current production dump trucks (6 plus models), and/or loaders (3 plus models), and/or new vehicle models with sales of $300m to $500m per year.

 

Interface with other Komatsu Engineering Groups as required for technical information exchange.

 

Interface and visit suppliers (3 plus) as required for technical information exchange.

 

Provide technical support to 5 other company operation's groups including Manufacturing, Marketing, Sales, Parts, and Service.

 

Visit distributor and customer sites (1 plus) as required.

 

Provide leadership for up to 3 subordinate Engineers.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develop electronic hardware requirements, create custom circuit board designs, required supporting documentation, validate hardware performance and durability, support hardware releasing and implementation.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Write clear and concise memo’s including drafts of technical documentation such as Parts and Service News, Operator and Shop Manuals, etc.  Make presentations during Design Reviews, etc.  Keep Assistant Chief Engineer and Chief Engineer informed of project status and advise of potential risks to the successful completion of the project to provide opportunity for timely corrective action.
  • Develop Quality Confirmation Check Sheets for design concepts.
  • Discuss, negotiate, and resolve specification issues with Manufacturing and Suppliers, as required.  Understand and accommodate manufacturing capabilities and limitations.
  • Determine required quality confirmation tests and coordinate with Test Department.
  • Meet Quality, Cost and Delivery targets established for the Project.  Utilize continuous improvement techniques to improve quality, reduce cost and lead time, etc.
  • Maintain effective Engineering Change Control by preparing and processing appropriate Engineering Release Letters.
  • Support Production of Prototype development by resolving problems with effective countermeasures and follow-up documentation.
  • Support Service and QA departments by determining root cause of problems and developing effective countermeasures.
  • Present design concept, quality confirmation check sheet and design progress at Design Review Meetings.
  • Support Sales and Marketing by ensuring that product meets customer expectations and by developing special features as required.
  • Travel to machine worksites to participate in surveys, investigate problems, understand applications, determine customer expectations, install and evaluate countermeasures, etc.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BS Degree in Electrical Engineering and 5+ years of experience in the design of related products. A Master’s Degree plus 3 years or greater experience will be considered the equivalent qualification.
  • 5+ years of experience and knowledge in the specialized areas of Hardware and Software Electronics relating to the collection, monitoring, analysis, controls, and display of vehicle data, ISO and MSHA regulations and recommended practices. General knowledge of hydraulics, engines, and drive systems. 
  • Proficiency in engineering principles including structural mechanics, hydraulics, heat transfer, electricity, ergonomics, etc.
  • Hardware architecture design experience with embedded microcontrollers (ARM, PowerPC, FGPA) and necessary peripherals (SRAM, DRAM, Flash, Ethernet, USB, CAN)
  • Experience with 24VDC digital, analog, power, and protection circuit designs
  • Experience with Altium Designer as CAD tool for printed circuit board schematic and layout design
  • Experience with FMEA and Risk Assessments of Electronic Controllers
  • Experience in leading development projects and ability to take ownership of projects and drive them to completion with minimal supervision.
  • Experience bench testing and debugging embedded systems (Oscilloscope, Logic Analyzer).
  • Experience with C/C++ embedded driver development (Digital IO, ADC, PWM, I2C, SPI)
  • Experience creating hardware design documentation (Requirements, Specifications, Test Plan, Hardware to Software Interface)
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for hardware designs
  • Ability to lead Associate Design Engineers, Design Engineers and Contract employees as required.
  • Proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point, as a minimum.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including international travel up to 5% of working time.

 

The ideal candidate would additionally have experience in the following:

  • Experience performing and troubleshooting environmental performance of Electronic Controllers (Temperature, Vibration, Abnormal Voltage, EMC, ESD)
  • Experience with mining trucks or mining equipment.
  • Experience with ISO13849 - Safety–Related Parts of Control System and MTTF.

 

Physical Requirements:  

  • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (life, carry, move) light to medium weights of 1-10 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
