Job Overview

The role will be primarily responsible for the coordination for all engine related conformity and compliance activities associated for North America region for all new, replacement and remanufactured engines and associated engine components.  This role will be a new leadership position that will be governed by NATC 1 Leadership, playing a pivotal role for ensuring that all engines placed in North America conform to market access requirements.  While, ensuring that all mandated conformity reporting is conducted (defect reporting, annual emissions reports etc.).  The incumbent will be a leader and a strong advocate for Komatsu’s business position regarding the implementation of new engine regulations etc. Thus, ensuring that Komatsu’s interests are best represented in regional Trade Associations and Standards Setting Organizations (SDOs) such as, Engine Manufacturers Association, EUROMOT etc. and SAE and ISO etc.  

This person will work closely with regional and international business partners (KLTD etc.) and will develop strong relationships with key governing offices such as California Air Resources Board (CARB), US EPA, OSHA, MSHA and other US and Canadian based regulatory bodies.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains categorized matrix of engine regulations for each region of North America and works closely Work KLTD. Development Division HQ.  
  • Provides training for all impacted cross-functional teams relating to all aspects of engine conformity
  • Communicates with Technical Centers in USA and Komatsu Marketing and Development Division apprised of changes and anticipated changes in the regulation matrix – even at the stage of legislative bill or draft bill
  • Cultivates constructive relationships with governmental agencies in order to correct issues quickly and to learn of impending changes in engine emissions legislation.
  • Respond to questions from Marketing, Field Sales, and Service pertaining to required local regulations.  Provides support to acquire certifications for products
  • In the event of out-of-compliance issues occurring, consults, and negotiates short-term resolution with relevant government agency/ inspector(s).  Working with responsible Technical Center(s) to resolve issue with permanent countermeasures.
  • Develops and executes action plans to resolve existing and emerging regulatory issues (labeling, reporting, certification etc.)
  • Ensures that funds are budgeted for compliance with regionally specific regulations
  • Participates with regional business associations such as Association of Equipment Manufacturers, Engine Manufacturer’s Association, and relevant governmental agencies such as OSHA, MSHA, Workman’s Compensation Board of British Columbia, etc.  Negotiate issues in order to represent Komatsu’s interests.
  • Works with industry counterparts (competitors) to develop safe and achievable standards within organizations such as ISO, SAE, etc.  Promote and report on the US engineering staff participation on the US committees that affect our product lines. Negotiate with counterparts to ensure that Komatsu’s standards and interests are upheld as much as possible. Be a voting member of ISO TC127 SC2 and SC3 committees.


  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree plus at least 5 years’ experience in construction, mining, forestry or utility equipment. 
  • Detailed, practical knowledge in operation, troubleshooting, repair and evaluation of construction, mining and utility equipment – especially including competitive models.  Ability to operate and compare Komatsu and competitive models is essential.
  • Expert in all aspects of engine labeling
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills in order to represent Komatsu’s interests in development of national and international standards (along with competitors such as Caterpillar, John Deere, CNH etc.)
  • Ability to work productively with Distributor, Customer and Komatsu Sales personnel in order to resolve technical and regulatory issues
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including international travel (Travel expected up to 20%)
