Job Overview

The Analytics Intern role is part of Komatsu Mining’s Surface Mining Analytics team. As part of the team, this role engages with an array of modern cloud tools and data science techniques in pursuit of developing operational analytic insights for large surface mining equipment.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative solutions to problems in the space of machine performance/health/maintenance enhancement and integrated mining systems optimization that leverage structured and unstructured, diverse ‘big data’ from the global equipment fleet, Komatsu engineering models, and state-of-the-art analytics tools/algorithms.
  • Drives project from concept development all the way to productionized deployment.
  • Contributes to dashboard and reporting development, in support of customer solutions.
  • Drive research in pursuit of new data science methods to solve mining machines and operations challenges.
  • Adopt best practices for data analytics workflow, testing, validation, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Drive analytics application development through all project phases, from problem formulation through productionized code deployment.
  • Perform ad hoc exploratory data analysis in support of internal Engineering, Product Management, and Distributor stakeholders.
  • Effectively communicate results of analysis with diverse array of technical and non-technical personas.
  • Support system engineering projects that have a substantial mix of electrical, mechanical, physics, algorithms and software design, and understand the underlying system implications.
  • Contribute to reusable code patterns, for use by Komatsu’s global analytics developer community.
  • Adapt to evolution of modern approaches to and techniques in data science, data mining, machine learning, signal processing, etc. For example, new techniques, tools, and programming languages as required (open source data science stack, signal processing libraries, data visualization, machine learning techniques, parallelized computation, big data and cloud computing ecosystem, etc.).


Education / Work Experience:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent).
  • Academic or work experience in following domains:
    • Data mining and analysis
    • Data visualization via storytelling, dashboarding, reports
    • Command of statistics
    • Digital signal processing, time series data, pattern recognition and extraction
    • Machine learning, regression, classification, clustering, deep learning
    • Optional, but helpful: Some knowledge of physics or mechanical/electrical engineering principles
  • ​​​​​​​Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Git version control.


Signal processing, data mining, data science, data cleansing, visualization, predictive analytics, estimation and optimization theory, dynamic systems modeling.
