Job Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Director, Compensation to join our Human Resources team. This role can be based out our office in Milwaukee, WI or Chicago, IL (Near O’Hare). In this role you will lead the design, implementation and ongoing evaluation of compensation systems to help drive and incent performance and employee engagement while ensuring that programs are cost effective and market competitive.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for implementation and standardization of compensation best practices across Komatsu to enhance organization effectiveness, resource management, and compliance.  Provide guidance and support to global HR from Compensation Center of Excellence to ensure alignment with business needs.
  • Oversee the global job evaluation process, development of competitive pay structures, and administration of year end compensation processes, including base pay increases, short-term incentive and long-term incentive payouts.  Ensure programs are within established budgets.
  • Work with HRIS to utilize current technologies to streamline compensation program administration.
  • Ensure compliance by keeping up to date on changes in laws and regulations affecting compensation and make recommendations to adjust company practices when needed.
  • Oversee the global job evaluation process, ensuring evaluations are market competitive and support the attraction and retention of employees world-wide.  Evaluate and approve roles at the Director level and above.
  • Oversee the annual development and approve updated global pay structures for salaried, non-exempt and hourly employees, ensuring competitiveness to external market data. 
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and approval of the spend on the Annual Employee Bonus and Salary Administration Programs.  
  • Lead projects to support the implementation and standardization of compensation best practices across Komatsu to enhance organization effectiveness, resource management, and compliance.
  • Review compensation programs regularly to ensure they support and align with the company’s pay for performance culture.  Work with HR and the business to adjust and roll-out program changes when needed.
  • Maintain a rapport with global HR that facilitates a cooperative working relationship serving as Compensation CoE to support them in supporting the business needs.  Provide advice and guidance to HR Business Partners/Managers/Generalists on compensation topics.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of procedures to ensure that programs are administered efficiently, consistently, fairly and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Support the development of competitive wage increase recommendations for contract negotiations.
  • Work with HRIS to utilize current technologies to support organization needs and streamline compensation program administration.
  • Oversee the implementation of annual processes in the K-Success Compensation Module; ensure that testing is completed by Comp. Team and global HR for year-end bonus and merit planning, processes, procedures and timelines are defined and communicated to HR and HRIS and adhered to, training materials are kept current and readily accessible to local HR.
  • Support the development of effective and regular compensation communications to ensure employee understanding and awareness of programs.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to direct reports; foster a culture of teamwork.
  • Ensure participation in major survey companies’ salary surveys to ensure the company’s ability to obtain competitive market data (Korn Ferry Hay Group, Aon Hewitt, Mercer).
  • Provide guidance on expatriate/relocation matters when needed, approve expenses for payment.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding compensation topics and trends and advise HR relative to these areas, including advice on FLSA exemption status.
     

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.  Professional designations (CCP, PHR, SPHR) highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of experience in human resources/compensation positions with increasing responsibility. 
  • Experienced with compensation program design and administration including job evaluation, short- and long-term incentives, salary structures, base pay merit review, expatriate policies, driving pay for performance culture, etc.
  • Knowledgeable of legal/regulatory aspects and current trends and developments in the field of compensation. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills in a sensitive global environment.  Ability to communicate and interact with individuals at all levels, and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.  
  • Strong Excel data analysis skills and experience with business information systems, preferably SAP.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks within aggressive deadlines.
  • Ability to lead change management and continuous improvement.
