Job Overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Human Resources team in Milwaukee, WI. This role will serve as a business partner to Loading business unit, Milwaukee - based senior management team.  It will also be the leader of the HR function for the Milwaukee manufacturing plant.  In that capacity the incumbent will utilize Human Resources expertise and leadership skills to enhance organizational effectiveness in the following core HR areas: Labor and Employee Relations, Staffing (Recruitment/Selection), Training & Development, Compensation & Benefits, Safety, Employment Law and Legal Compliance.  This role will manage a staff of approximately 3 employees. 

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Employee Relations – Collaborate with management to determine the most appropriate approach to employee relations issues to achieve conflict resolution in the most fair and consistent manner possible. Assist managers with the application of disciplinary actions and improvement plans to establish a work environment characterized by consistency and fairness.  Utilize the progressive discipline policy in a manner that fosters employee accountability and drives operational effectiveness/results.
  • Labor Relations – This incumbent shall have primary responsibility for the company’s relationship with the Milwaukee bargaining unit.  Accordingly, this individual will manage the disciplinary and grievances processes associated with that bargaining unit.  Will understand the body of past practices and collective bargaining process for Milwaukee Operations. Will also lead the contract negotiation cycle.  May serve as a subject matter expert to other locations on collective bargaining.
  • Staffing – Serve as an HR Business Partner to plan effective organizational strategies and structures to satisfy the staffing requirements in the short term as well as addressing long term needs.  Cultivate a staffing process which identifies highly qualified candidates (both internal/external and/or passive/active job seekers) with the requisite skill set to meet the job requirements.  Target talent which infuses new ideas, methodologies, and approaches into the Loading Business Unit business.
  • Training & Development - Identify knowledge/skill gaps within the employee population between job requirement and current abilities and identify the most appropriate training and development interventions to bridge those gaps as quickly and effectively as possible.  
  • Compensation & Benefits – Collaborate with the corporate Compensation and Benefits team to develop compensation programs, merit budgets, incentive programs, and/or bonus plans that drive desired behaviors and lead to specific business outcomes.  Work closely with these groups to address site-specific needs and concerns.  Escalate issues as appropriate that have not been resolved in other manners.
  • Safety -  Working closely with the MKE manufacturing leadership, Milwaukee Distribution Center leadership and Safety leadership, operate existing, and develop and implement new and effective safety policies and reviews which work towards the goal of 0 safety accidents.  Work closely with these individuals to facilitate the roll-out of changes across the plant’s workforce.
  • Employment Law - Ensure compliance with all Federal, State and Local laws governing employment practices and policies, salary and wage administration, safety and environmental compliance, etc.  Address IDHR, NLRB, or other regulatory issues as they occur.  Work closely with internal and external legal counsel to represent Komatsu’s interests in regulatory or legal issues.
  • Compliance Process Leader – Oversee the AAP, EEO, ISO, and compliance training required at the MKE Manufacturing and MDC worksites.  Work with the Manager, HR to identify opportunities for diversity and inclusion development within the appropriate business units.
  • Other duties and assignments as required supporting senior management.
     

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years in a senior management role within a unionized manufacturing environment.
  • Experience coaching, leading and mentoring direct reports 
  • In-depth knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and grievance procedures.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and develop a team of HR professionals.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proven track record of implementing HR initiatives that drive organizational success and employee engagement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions and levels of the organization.
  • Strong project management experience
  • Experience with HRIS systems and proficiency in HR analytics.
  • Demonstrated prior success in a change agent role
  • This role is based at our manufacturing facility and requires occasional travel as needed.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certification such as SHRM-SCP or SPHR.
  • Prior HR management experience in a multi-site role required
