Job Overview

The Senior EHS Manager provides effective leadership and direction to the Komatsu EHS teams and is responsible for directing the Environmental, Health and Safety functions supporting all EHS goals and objectives.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Works as part of a global team of EHS leaders to develop globally standardized programs, policies and procedures, tailored to each regulatory framework within which Komatsu operates
  • Ensures that workplace conditions comply with all applicable federal and state Occupational Safety and Health standards and provisions of any contractual agreement, ensuring that all required records are prepared and maintained
  • Identifies action based EHS goals for site leadership team members, functional managers and front-line leaders to support achievement of the site’s EH&S targets and objectives.
  • Manages completion of site and workstation-level risk assessments to identify and prioritize EH&S aspects and hazards
  • Ensures full deployment throughout operations of the Occupational Medicine – Triage System for all potential work-related medical cases
  • Oversee all investigations into incidents to ensure root cause is understood, corrective actions in place and all steps taken to ensure there is no repetition
  • Develops programs & processes that recognize, evaluate and control hazardous workplace conditions and environmental factors or stressors arising in or from the workplace, that may cause sickness, impaired health or well-being, or significant discomfort and inefficiency among workers or citizens of the community.
  • Develops a global industrial hygiene (IH) strategy in support of the global EHS strategy.
  • Works with U.S Workers Compensation Manager and team, to drive costs reduction and number of claims across operations
  • Ensures Injury Management and Return to Work protocols are in place and implemented across operations
  • Maintains effective working relationships with all internal / external stakeholders including unions, regulatory bodies, customers, and industry partners
  • Drives standardization of global EHS programs, procedures, policies that support One Komatsu and which meet all local regulatory and business requirements
  • Directly engages with senior leaders of Komatsu involving communication of EH&S strategies, plans, systems, programs and results.
  • Works with key EHS leaders in our global regions to understand the challenges, opportunities, risks and drivers that will impact the EHS strategy

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in EHS or related field.
  • Technical training and / or qualifications in Industrial Hygiene.
  • Successful leadership experience within an EHS function.
  • 15 plus years of experience in heavy industrial and manufacturing sectors or other relevant industry dealing with EHS.
  • Solid understanding of EHS regulatory standards, interpretations and directives including OSHA, EPA, DOT.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating a safety culture based on leadership, accountability and a systematic approach to continuous improvement of EH&S outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead a capable and high performing team of functional experts.
  • Experience in managing on-site security and security contractors.
  • Demonstrated high level of communication and influencing skills which allow for effective engagement of senior leaders, operational leaders, employees and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical skills with strong business management and financial acumen are required.
  • Clear, concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) designation is desirable but not required.
