Job Overview

The Cost Accountant Role at Komatsu Mining will be working in a fast-paced environment while partnering with various members of our Komatsu Organization.    This Role will partner with the following departments: Accounting/Controller, Product Support, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, Commercial Management, Production Planning, Supply Chain, Subcontract, Quality, and Aftermarket Groups.  The Cost Accountant will also be responsible for developing standard costs and cost estimates thru partnerships with Supply Chain, Subcontract, Manufacturing, Planning, & Industrial Engineering.

Key Job Responsibilities

* Standard costs maintenance and all costing-related fields in SAP.  Standard costs maintenance for all original equipment and aftermarket parts in the U.S. This includes reviewing purchasing info records, bills of material, and labor routings for accuracy.  Approximately 300 new materials created each week that need costing information updated in SAP before the material can be received, shipped, or billed.

* Review OE machine standard costs and prepare a monthly cost estimate.  The cost estimate will be used in the monthly POC analysis for machine costs.  Production order variance analysis is to be done weekly by running the necessary transactions in SAP and analyzing the results.  Analysis will include clear and precise explanations of what is driving the variances, and identifying who to consult with to drive change thru completion.  Maintaining and reconciling the deferred ledger account associated with production order variance is required as well.

* Performs insightful financial analysis over elements impacting supply chain, including payment terms, cash discounts, etc. Owns the material overhead calculation and monitors spend vs. receipts. Reviews spend by category – direct (purchase complete, manufacture, subcontract) and indirect and reviews trends against COGS and inventory turns).

* Make vs Buy Analysis. Assist the Senior Cost Accountant in identifying true landed costs of subcontracted materials and drive discussions and decisions on whether to make in-house or subcontract.

* Aids in the oversight of global supply chain budget and forecast, including PPV, cost center spend, headcount reporting (including development of a headcount model), etc. Help to identify potential cost-out opportunities.  Determine global supply chain allocation, as needed.

* Analyze purchase price variances each month and clearly explain what is driving these variances.  Will also need to identify who to consult with in order to drive change thru completion.

* Perform process to review BOMs/Routings with Industrial Engineering on a regular basis, and understanding the plans of keeping these updated throughout the fiscal year.  This will improve the accuracy of our standard costs.

* Ensures accounting policies are appropriately followed and SOX controls are implemented and operating as designed.

* Partners with cross functional areas to identify and help drive costs out of the business. Measures and reports results of cost reduction initiatives

* Assists in the review contracts along with supply chain and legal to understand financial implications to the business and provide recommendations where necessary. Understands any potential rebates and performance guarantees within the contracts and subsequently monitors.

* Owns the Original Equipment Shovel and Drill costs, including production order variances for Milwaukee operations and work with production management to identify root causes of variances.  Develop action plans for minimizing future variances.

* Owns Global Supply Chain financial metrics, including spend and variances.

* Partner with key members of the organization in Make vs Buy analysis.

* Helps to oversee supply chain budget and forecast.

* Assists the Senior Costing Role in special projects.

Qualifications/Requirements

* Bachelors degree in Accounting or a related discipline.         CMA and/or CPA is preferred.

* 1-3+ years experience in manufacturing accounting processes and operations is preferred..

* Experience working with SAP production management software and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, etc.).

* Strong critical thinking and intuitive problem solving skills with an attention to detail required.  Healthy professional skepticism and inquisitiveness.  Continuous improvement mindset.

* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

* Ability to read, understand, and analyze production order blueprints is a plus.

* Knowledge of P&H or Mining Industry products is a plus.
