Job Overview

The Metallurgy Engineer Lead provides both technical and leadership expertise for heat treat processes, ensuring materials consistently meet performance and quality requirements. This role combines advanced metallurgical knowledge with team development by mentoring junior engineers and interns, while driving improvements in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and equipment performance. The position also leads key capital projects, optimizes thermal processing operations, and serves as a path toward assuming full managerial responsibility for the Thermal Processing team.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and optimize heat treat processes including carburizing, normalizing, quench and temper, and induction hardening.

  • Conduct metallurgical analysis and materials testing to ensure compliance with specifications.

  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, interns, and co-ops to strengthen team capability.

  • Manage and execute capital projects for new equipment, upgrades, safety, and ergonomics.

  • Drive troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align heat treat processes with design, quality, and production requirements.

  • Serve as the technical subject matter expert for audits, customer visits, and internal stakeholders.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in heat treat operations and metallurgy.

  • Demonstrated expertise in carburizing, quench and temper, induction hardening, and related processes.

  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, heat treat process control, and materials testing.

  • Proven experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, and developing technical teams.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with NADCAP, CQI-9, AMS standards, or other heat treat quality systems.

  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Comfort with statistical analysis, SPC, and data-driven decision-making.

  • Customer-facing experience supporting audits, specifications, or technical inquiries.
