Job Overview
Within the Decarbonization & Electrification engineering group (D&E), The Engineering Manager leads a team of high level, highly experienced engineering subject-matter experts and designers engaged in the design and development of Decarbonization and Electrification components and infrastructure for surface and underground mining equipment (examples include dynamic power charging systems, mechanical to electric drive system conversions, BEV’s, etc.)
Decarbonization is one of the most important strategic pillars to both Komatsu and our customers with a Komatsu objective of 50% carbon emissions reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Manages the engineering design and project management on NPD of Decarbonization and Electrification components and infrastructure across several Komatsu’s business units (Underground Soft Rock, Underground Hard Rock, Electric Drive Trucks, Electric Wheel Loaders, Surface Drills, etc.)
- Develops and manages D&E Engineering project plans:
o Develops Business Unit functional requirements:
o Creates and manages high level multi-disciplinary project task networks
o Establishes and leads milestones reviews
o Partners with stakeholders and supports validation testing and test plan creation.
o Assigns and manages engineering SME resources to execute projects.
o Continually communicates with project stakeholders on project status and progress. - Partners with 3rd party suppliers and manufacturing stakeholders to ensure manufacturability and drives a high level of sub-component commonality and manufacturing process commonality.
- Interfaces with 3rd party partners and across internal Business Units within all functional areas, including business units Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing, Marketing, Planning and Purchasing.
- Collaborates and guides component’s NPD performance specification and requirements definition creation.
- Interfaces with Senior Director of Engineering in a collaborative and communicative manner with the flexibility to make own decisions and the ability to escalate major issues, as required.
- Actively participates in HR processes related to employment decisions, staffing needs, and other HR activities, performance evaluations, goals & objective setting, development, etc.
- Mentors subordinates to continually build world-class engineering team.
- Manages project and departmental budget.
- This position has a role in decision making on technical matters impacting the safety, reliability, availability, and performance of all Komatsu Mining Technology products globally. These decisions have a direct impact on product competitiveness now and in the future, reliability, impact on gross margins, customer perception, warranty and LCM costs, and the implementation of overall product strategies.
Qualifications/Requirements
Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences with a strong background in vehicle electrification.
- 15 plus years’ experience in surface or underground mining equipment or other similar heavy industries related to electric drive system design and testing.
- Direct experience in Off Highway Vehicle electric drive system design and testing and the management of associated engineering or technical professionals
- Knowledge of key decarbonization technologies (i.e. battery, hydrogen, power electronics, static charging, dynamic power transfer, software systems).
- Ability to provide technical explanation and consultation to business unit’s Product Groups and "non-expert" areas so that product requirements, issues and test results are understood and actioned.
- Strong engineering project management skills as it applies to project and scope definition, resource allocation, schedule, milestone reviews,
- Strong presentation skills and confidence in overall knowledge of mining electric drive systems.
- Advanced PC skills required for management and presentation software tools (Excel, Microsoft Office, etc.)
- Ability to travel up to 5-10% of time to support customer meetings, VOC, and BU support activities. Common destinations include US, Canada, Australia, Chile, South Africa
Preferred skills:
- Direct experience with large electric vehicle design
- Experience with associated electrification component selections and sizing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Project or similar. Proficiency in Concerto project management software a plus.
- Background in SAP.
Additional Information
Hiring Range
At Komatsu, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role salary range is $131,200 - $164,000 - $196,800. The actual offer will consider a wide range of factors, including experience and location.
