Job Overview

The HVAC Engineer III at Komatsu will be heavily involved with the development of HVAC Systems for Mobile Mining Equipment Cabins and Instrumentation Rooms.  This Role will be interacting with a number of Internal Departments at Komatsu including but not limited to: Engineering Organizationincluding mechanical design, manufacturing and applications engineering groups– to gain information on objectives, performance and business performance and to respond to requests for information. Manufacturing Management, including plant Supervision, Quality, Planning, etc – to provide technical support on production issues. Supplier Personnel – those providing technical services and/or the supply equipment in support of existing methods and those under development.  Hourly Production Personnel – to provide them technical advice and receive design feedback.  MinePro Services Personnel – to seek or receive feedback on HVAC system performance and/or to provide technical assistance. Product Management and Marketing to review product specifications, cost benefit analysis and product features

Key Job Responsibilities

Responsible for Mobile Equipment HVAC Systems Engineering:

  • Develop HVAC systems for Mobile Mining Equipment Cabins and instrumentations rooms. Design ventilation and air filtration systems to protect operators from respirable dust encountered in mining operations.
  • Selection of compressors, coils, expansion valves, fans, and other HVAC components to meet the challenges encounter in Mining (Heavy vibration, dust, corrosion, extreme weather and 24/7 operation)
  • Supervise the design of HVAC Equipment enclosures and plenums.
  • Work with OE product groups to develop integrated and reliable HVAC Solution to meet marketing specifications.
  • Identify HVAC system’s normal operation modes and failure states to support the development of system monitoring systems
  • Facilitate the redesign of HVAC systems for new non-ozone depleting refrigerants
  • Design of Refrigeration, Ducting and Mechanical Components for Mobile Equipment HVAC Systems

Conduct all appropriate calculations to support an engineering investigation of a design issue or to support NPD on Mobile Equipment HVAC Systems

Support testing of Mobile Equipment HVAC Systems in Test Lab and/or field by:

  • Creating Test Procedures
  • Selecting appropriate sensors and data acquisition equipment
  • Supervising the HVAC Prototype Testing

Lead research for development, design improvement, and cost reduction of Mobile HVAC products and components.

Lead design effort for all mechanical aspects of Mobile HVAC products including:

  • Off-road mobile equipment (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) COTS hardware.
  • Develop overall system layout for refrigerant and airflow
  • HVAC Refrigerant Piping and Air Ducts
  • Operate and maintain Laboratory Data Acquisition System. LabView programming.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or HVAC Engineering (Discipline is a Preference)
  • 10+ years of experience in HVAC design and product development

Technical Experience in the following Areas is desirable:

  1. Packaged Air conditioning equipment design
  2. Design calculations of HVAC systems, capacity, airflow, COP, solar load etc.
  3. The ability to develop engineering documentation such as drawing, specification and standards is a must
  4. Prototype validation, root cause analysis and countermeasures recommendations
  5. Supervision of validation testing
  • Development of prototype testing and validation is desired
  • National Instrument Controllers and LabVIEW experience is a plus
  • Experience with Solid Works and/or AutoCAD Electrical is also preferred
  • Familiarity with large industrial equipment or off-road/highway equipment would be a plus
  • Prioritization, Motivation, Communication and Interpersonal/Relationship Building skills
  • Effective Technical Information Communication
