Job Overview

The NPD Mechanic assembles, tests, and validates new underground hard rock heavy mobile equipment prototypes and first-off units. This involves verifying parts against designs, setting clearances, and performing pre-assembly tasks. The NPD Mechanic also aligns components for assembly, tracks missing or compromised parts, and provides feedback on design changes for better manufacturability and serviceability. Additionally, the role includes supporting prototype setup, trials, and testing to ensure quality and functionality, as well as maintaining a safe work environment and complying with safety policies.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic Certification preferred or equivalent of mechanical technical certification or diploma in mechanical field of study (automotive, truck and coach, etc.) with heavy equipment experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years related experience with mining industry-specific equipment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years equipment assembly or rebuild exposure is preferred.
  • Travel up to 15% of the time for product field testing and validation.

 

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Verify conformance of parts to stock lists or designs/blueprints.
  • Set and verify parts clearances.
  • Perform pre-assembly activities such as cleaning and lubricating parts.
  • Perform pre-work risk assessments to ensure all potential safety risks and unknown tasks are thought through or mitigated prior to work start.
  • Position or align components for assembly, manually or using hoists with proper lifting requirements. 
  • Maintain lists of missing, compromised parts and components and feed information back to project management.
  • Read and interpret designs/blueprints, sketches, schematics and written instructions as available to assemble the parts or products.
  • Mark up designs/blueprints, sketches with corrections, changes and provide to project management for engineering review and follow through on design changes.
  • Make recommendations of design changes for manufacturability, serviceability for future products or prototype improvements.
  • Follows scopes of work within time constraints to meet established project assembly targets and testing targets.
  • To ensure quality, a new product development mechanic also looks for faulty components during the assembly process and may be required to test assembled parts or products to ensure functionality.
  • Inspect, operate, and test completed products to verify functioning, machine capabilities, or conformance to customer specifications.
  • Perform installation, repair, inspection, reassembly, replacing, refitting, and adjusting products as required.
  • Support the development of prototype assembly test procedures to promote production of quality products. 
  • Complete any required assembly documentation. Perform final checks and adjustments for any defects to ensure high quality products. 
  • Support prototype product setup, trails and testing on Komatsu site or at other test sites and facilities when completing product development phases.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment designs/blueprints and schematics.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment for testing is preferred.
  • Manual dexterity to operate hand tools.
  • Ability to Operate Forklift.
  • Ability to operate cranes and jigs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail in safety sensitive work setting.
  • Good computer literacy with knowledge of Microsoft office.
  • Good report writing ability.
  • Flexible, self-motivated and driven to achieve customer satisfaction goals and targets.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work underground if required.

Compensation Range

At Komatsu, base pay is just one part of a comprehensive total compensation package designed to support and reward our employees. 

For this role, the hourly base compensation range is $33.00 CAD to $43.00 CAD. The final offer will be determined based on several factors, including the candidates' skills, experience, qualifications, and the position location.
