Job Overview

Join our Hard Rock Drilling Product Engineering team as a Mechanical Designer, Drilling and Bolting Attachments and be at the forefront of innovation in the mining industry! As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible to design & develop new and innovative products to solve problems faced by our customers.  This includes utilizing computer-aided software, specifically SolidWorks, to create 3D layouts, drawings, and schematics of parts, assemblies and technical renderings.  You will participate in customer visits, problem definition, concept development, detailed design and component selection, cross functional design reviews, system prototyping and validation, production design release, manufacturing support, and support of field personnel product commissioning and troubleshooting.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • This role will primarily be focused on drilling and bolting attachments to be fitted onto the booms of Komatsu underground jumbo drills and bolters.
  • Utilize computer-aided design (SolidWorks) software to create 3D drawings and schematics of parts, assemblies and technical renderings.
  • Create detailed drawings to capture, process, dimensions, inspection and other pertinent engineering information utilizing knowledge of engineering principles and applicable design standards and EHS regulations.
  • Develop drawings from notes, sketches, existing drawings, design concepts, verbal instruction and/or engineering specifications.
  • Document updates to designs and ensure that any changes are recorded and prepared in accordance with engineering change procedures.
  • Providing continuous support to production team during the assembly phase of capital equipment builds.
  • Carry out inspections, measurements, field tests and other evaluations to identify design issues in order to create scopes of work to address the design issues and continuously improve the design.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years with design of underground hard rock equipment desired.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design standards, techniques, methods, and architecture.
  • Experience in weldment design and stress analysis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software and ERP systems. (SAP considered an asset)
  • Experience with project management methodologies and software.
  • Fully competent with 3D CAD design, preferably SolidWorks
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, design standards, and EHS regulations.
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes (in particular welding and machining)
  • Understanding of Bill of Materials and MRP systems (ECN’s/NCR’s)
  • Solid problem-solving skills, including the ability to conduct investigations, perform calculations, and run tests.
  • High level of initiative with the ability to work independently and as part of a broader team.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics and electrics
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on accuracy and quality.
