Controls Design Engineer, Underground Drills

Job Overview

Reporting to the Hard Rock Controls & System Engineering Manager, this role will initially be focused on developing and delivering control and automation solutions for underground mine development. Working within a small and focused development team, there will be great opportunity to leverage existing knowledge, learn new skills, and become part of a dynamic team.

Remote work available for individuals located within 400km of the Greater Sudbury region.  

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Work with underground drills product team including product management, product application and commercial teams to develop understanding of product functionality and characteristics required for controls systems needs;

  • Work with various cross-functional teams to develop and program software controls requirements for new product controls, product features, diagnostics, algorithms, etc;

  • Evaluate control strategies and algorithms and contribute to setting performance criteria, developing validation plans for each system and ensuring plan execution;

  • Hands-on hardware setup, system debugging and code optimization;

  • Develop and execute the test plans necessary for the validation of technical solutions, on the different machinery, while taking into account the norms and standards established; 

  • Design software system interfaces and ensure these systems are continually improved once they are operational;

  • Design circuits, generate electrical schematics;

  • Research and specify components selection; 

  • Develop bill of materials (BOMs) for all assigned control systems;

  • Ensure controls interface compatibility between machines iterations being designed and others with which it must interface physically or functionally through collaboration with other Design Engineers;

  • Ensure control systems designed meet safety regulations and standards as applicable by customer geography;

  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting for manufacturing and aftermarket factory support;


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or Software Engineering with relevant experience.

  • 1+ year of Applicable Experience.... (Robotics, Sensors, Software, Programming etc.).

  • Strong programming skills in C++,C, C#  , and Python.

  • Experience with ROS or other robotics middleware.

  • Experience with common approaches for robotic perception and object detection.

  • Experience with control architecture design.

  • Ability to work with a variety of sensor data: LIDAR, stereo vision, inertial measurement units (IMUs), radar, and ultrasonic. Familiarity with multimodal sensor fusion preferred.

  • Experience in various communication protocols (RS232/422/485, TCP/IP, CANOpen, J1939, etc.).

Additional Information

Other desired skills & experience:

  • CUDA and GPU programming.

  • Proficiency with Detailed understanding of 2D/3D model and CAD formats including STEP, DWG/DXF, STEP.

  • Advanced multithreading programming experience.

  • Experience in developing and delivering 3D CAD file parsers.

  • Experience in developing and delivering autonomous control applications with mining industry experience preferred.

  • Field experience with on-site customer implementation (installation/commissioning/troubleshooting/support).
