Key Job Responsibilities

As the Regional EHS Manager, you will lead the design, implementation, and continuous enhancement of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs for multiple mining and service sites across the western United States. You will act as the primary EHS authority, driving compliance, mitigating risks, and integrating safety as a fundamental business value.

• Develop, execute, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs that align with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including MSHA, OSHA, EPA, and DOT requirements, to meet or exceed compliance standards.
• Partner closely with regional and site leadership to embed EHS considerations into operational planning and decision-making processes.
• Oversee risk management through detailed site inspections, hazard identification, safety audits, and corrective action follow-ups to promote a safe working environment.
• Lead in-depth incident investigations and root cause analyses, championing lessons learned to prevent recurrence and continuously improve safety performance.
• Design and deliver impactful, role-specific training programs targeted at various workforce segments, including supervisors, technicians, and contractors, enhancing safety competence and awareness.
• Manage and monitor contractor safety compliance, establishing clear expectations and fostering cooperative relationships to maintain high safety standards at customer sites.
• Collaborate with Human Resources to support employee wellness initiatives, including workers' compensation management and return-to-work programs, thus promoting overall workforce health and retention.
• Oversee environmental compliance related to hazardous materials, waste management, stormwater, and spill prevention, striving to minimize environmental impact.
• Provide expertise on occupational health matters such as industrial hygiene, hazard assessments, and ergonomics to foster a safe and health-conscious workplace culture.
• Lead preparedness efforts for emergencies and business continuity, ensuring robust plans and team readiness across sites.
• Coordinate and lead internal and external EHS audits, including customer and ISO certification audits, responding promptly to findings and fostering continuous improvement driven by audit results.
• Develop, monitor, and report on key EHS performance metrics to regional and corporate leadership, supporting data-driven decision-making and strategic planning.
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with mine site stakeholders to align EHS objectives closely with operational goals and customer expectations.
• Take initiative in additional duties that align with Komatsu’s mission to uphold the highest standards of operational safety and environmental responsibility.

Qualifications/Requirements

Essential Qualifications and Expertise

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Risk Management, or a closely related field, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience in EHS roles.
• Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in EHS management within mining, heavy equipment manufacturing, construction, or similarly complex industrial environments.
• At least three years of leadership experience overseeing EHS programs across multiple sites or business units, demonstrating the ability to lead teams and influence organizational culture.
• Extensive knowledge of MSHA regulations and proven success in implementing mining industry safety standards to enhance workplace safety.
• In-depth understanding of OSHA, DOT, EPA, and relevant state regulations, with a strong track record of ensuring organizational compliance.
• Proficiency in conducting thorough incident investigations, performing root cause analyses, and deploying sustainable corrective and preventive measures.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization to foster a culture of safety and accountability.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, capable of coaching leadership, delivering effective presentations, and simplifying complex EHS concepts for diverse audiences.
• Flexibility and readiness to travel up to 40% regionally, including visits to remote and operationally challenging mine sites, to support on-the-ground leadership and program implementation.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record as required by company policy for safe travel and onsite mobility.

Preferred Skills and Certifications

• Experience supporting both surface and underground mining safety programs and industry-specific protocols.
• Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent credentials.
• Familiarity with the design, implementation, and auditing of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
• Expertise in environmental permitting processes, hazardous materials management, and pollution prevention strategies.
• Knowledge of workers’ compensation frameworks and successful return-to-work program execution.
• Background in supporting mobile and field service operations with an emphasis on heavy equipment safety and regulatory requirements.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to undertake frequent travel within the western United States, efficiently navigating between office settings and active mining sites characterized by variable terrain and conditions.
• Capability to perform work safely and effectively both indoors and outdoors, under diverse climatic conditions ranging from extreme heat to cold and inclement weather.
• Comfort and compliance working in active industrial environments, consistently adhering to prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety standards.
