Job Overview
The Hydraulic Shovel Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining Komatsu hydraulic mining shovels and related equipment. This role ensures equipment reliability and performance by addressing complex electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic issues in a safe, efficient, and professional manner while supporting customer operations in the field.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to Komatsu and customer safety policies, procedures
- Perform all work in accordance with MSHA regulations and site-specific safety requirements
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments prior to task execution
- Ensure proper Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures are followed at all times
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems on hydraulic shovels
- Utilize diagnostic tools, schematics, and technical manuals to isolate equipment faults
- Identify root causes and implement corrective actions to minimize repeat failures
- Support failure analysis and provide detailed feedback for continuous improvement
- Perform repairs and component replacements on hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
- Maintain components such as pumps, cylinders, valves, drive systems, and control systems
- Conduct preventative maintenance and inspections to ensure optimal performance and uptime
- Interpret electrical schematics, hydraulic flow diagrams, and mechanical drawings
- Apply troubleshooting best practices across integrated machine systems
- Utilize laptops, diagnostic software, and onboard monitoring systems for fault identification
- Accurately document work performed, parts used, and failure findings
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, planners, and customers regarding equipment status
- Provide clear updates on repair timelines, delays, or additional work requirements
- Support shift turnover communication to ensure continuity
- Prioritize tasks based on safety, production impact, and operational needs
- Manage job scope, required parts, and tools effectively
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including service trucks and job sites
Qualifications/Requirements
- Technical Qualifications: Proven experience with the diagnostics and repair of heavy hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems preferably related to mining equipment or similar heavy machinery.
- Education & Certifications: Completion of a relevant technical or trade certification (e.g., industrial mechanics, heavy equipment technician) is preferred. MSHA certifications or eligibility to obtain them is required.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams, mechanical blueprints, and technical manuals.
- Computer Competency: Skilled in using diagnostic software, laptops, and electronic monitoring systems essential for fault analysis and system tuning.
- Physical Abilities: Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy components, working in confined spaces, and operating equipment in various outdoor environments.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical abilities with a focus on root cause identification and effective resolution of equipment malfunctions.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams and communicate technical information effectively across different organizational levels.
- Safety Orientation: Demonstrated commitment to adhering to and promoting a culture of safety and compliance within all work activities.
