Major Responsibilities

  1. Provide direction, technical welding and fabrication support for the SE region manufacturing sites.
  2. Conduct welder training, testing, evaluation and certification.
  3. Collect and analyze weld defect data and implement corrective measures.
  4. Provide technical support to Quality Department.
  5. Develop and conduct training for site weld inspectors.
  6. Support regional sites by assuming the role of site Quality personnel during their absence.
  7. Conduct Exit Audit on rebuilds and OE equipment
  8. Support customer disassembly and failure analysis for warranty returns.
  9. Conduct internal audits of the Quality Management System.


Predominant Tasks

  1. Conduct scheduled audits of Weld Processes and Products.
  2. Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions for observed nonconformities.
  3. Create and/or modify weld procedures as needed.
  4. Develop and administer training for new employees, products, and processes.
  5. Manage Welder qualification processes.
  6. Perform weld inspection and generate report of findings.
  7. Support ISO program by participating in site audits.
  8. Insure that employees are compliant to established weld procedures and processes.
  9. Conduct testing of new and upgraded employees to Quality & AWS Code requirements.
  10. Communicate welding requirements in new employee orientations, job talks and other venues.



  • B.S. in an engineering discipline, preferably welding.  A.A.S. in Welding Technology and 5+ years in a Welding Engineering/Inspection environment may be substituted.
  • AWS CWI certification or as a condition of employment, obtain one in 6 months. 
  • Knowledge and experience in Welding Processes and Controls, Welding Equipment and Methods, Metal Fabrication, and Characteristics of Metals is required.
  • Background in Quality Assurance to include: Root Cause Analysis, Development and Implementation of Corrective and Preventive Actions, and Procedure Development is required.


Strong communication skills with the ability to train employees on weld theory and techniques is a must.

Impact is based on a 10% reduction in cost of poor quality in the area where assigned. 

Savings are associated with reduction in lead time, process improvement, scrap and rework as-well-as reduced customer/field complaints. 

Include limits of authority on matters of expenditures, changing policies, implementing plans.

Position is authorized for expenditures to sustain daily operations which are not to exceed $1,000 per expenditure.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee initiatives to reduce the cost of poor quality defined as the summation of scrap, rework, and warranty as a percentage of total sales.
  • Partner with manufacturing operations and technical services to decrease lead times and cost while simultaneously increasing quality, customer satisfaction, and brand credibility. 
  • Participate in the planning, development and implementation of quality initiatives in accordance with current operating procedures. 
  • Initiate, recommend and manage process improvement changes with various departments.  
  • Increase quality by building process control and standardization into product planning, development, and manufacturing. 
  • Partner with performance leader and human resources to support learning and development activities pertaining to individual, departmental the location needs.
  • Monitor the cost of poor quality on a monthly basis. Complete a comparison analysis to plan and report on variances. 
  • Execute non-conformance and root cause analysis as a member of a cross-functional team. 
  • Manage and monitor the quality system in assigned areas; oversee quality functions and create supporting quality documentation. 
  • Develop, create, revise and maintain appropriate quality documentation including work instructions and inspection plans to support manufacturing and assembly of conforming material; create documents to serve as objective evidence of completed work.
  • Execute internal process, work station, and safety audits; work with inspectors to increase the strength of the quality system on the floor.  
  • Complete 8D investigations for all non-conformance issues over 10K.  Work cross-functionally to institute containment actions, short term and long term resolutions that prevent reoccurrence. 
  • Serve as the liaison between quality and operations management; advise and act as subject matter expert to manufacturing leaders and support staff.
  • Participate in FMEA component quality planning sessions, first article criteria and fit checks. 
  • Participate in meetings including; daily management meetings, material review board meetings, and change control board meetings. 
  • Ensure gauge calibration compliance, measurement system analysis studies, and gauge repeatability and reproducibility studies.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality Engineering, Material Science, Operations or another associated field is required. 
  • 2-3 years of Process Quality/Quality Engineering experience is required.
  • Ability to direct personal and professional growth through continued education and certifications is required. 
  • ASQ Quality Certification is preferred. 
  • Lean/Six Sigma Certification is preferred.
  • Experience with statistics and statistical analysis is required. 
  • SAP experience is preferred. 
  • Manufacturing experience with fabrication, welding, heat treat and machining is preferred.
  • Ability to review and understand drawings/blueprints and have familiarity with measuring systems.
