DevOps Engineer (12-month fixed term) – Milton QLD

At Komatsu, we build software that powers the largest mining equipment in the world — including trucks, excavators, bulldozers, and wheel loaders. Our systems run both on-board industrial computers and mine-site office servers, connected via private Wi-Fi networks.

Unlike most cloud-based environments, our deployments are on-premise, air-gapped, and site-specific. Each mine site runs its own infrastructure, and mobile equipment cannot connect to the internet. This makes our work both challenging and unique.

Why join us?

  • You’ll work on some of the largest mining equipment in the world
  • Solve problems most engineers never encounter: high-availability systems in remote, offline environments
  • Apply your Azure cloud skills in a real-world on-premise setting

Your role:

We are seeking a DevOps Engineer who is experienced in Azure cloud deployments and wants to apply those skills to on-premise, offline environments. You will:

  • Deploy and manage Kubernetes (including Helm), Docker, Postgres, and Kafka across isolated mine-site clusters.
  • Implement & maintain GitOps workflows with Flux CD for automated, audited continuous delivery.
  • Adapt Azure-based workflows for on-premise servers.
  • Support site deployments and upgrades in air-gapped conditions.
  • Design and operate monitoring, logging and alerting solutions to ensure uptime and performance.

What we’re looking for:

  • Proven experience with Linux, Kubernetes, Docker, Postgres, and Kafka – on Azure VMs or AKS.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in constrained environments.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Azure Local or Azure IoT Edge.
  • Background in air-gapped or industrial systems.

This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term role, based in Queensland

Travel Requirements

  • Less than 10 percent of the time

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide front line support of the division's managed development environments ensuring availability, cost, and access is maintained.
  • Adopt, promote and implement a cyber-security first approach.
  • Perform updates of infrastructure, platform services, and 3rd party components.
  • Establish and maintain deployment version control tooling to provide environment integrity.
  • Work with IT to ensure communication between on-prem and cloud resources is maintained and optimal.
  • Take ownership of the environments providing recommendations on enhancements and improvements based on facts.
  • Establish KPIs targeted to measure security, uptime, availability, use, and access.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and planning processes.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree Computer Science or equivalent
  • Proven experience and skills in a programming language, preferably Java, Kotlin, C#.
  • Proven experience with cloud hosting platforms including Microsoft Azure.
  • Proven experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Proven experience with Helm for packaging and deploying Kubernetes workloads
  • Proven experience with Flux CD for GitOps-driven continuous delivery
  • Proven experience with source control and branching strategies.
  • Proven experience with Software Testing concepts, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Proven experience with Configuration Management concepts, challenges and best practices.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, problem-solving, and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new technology and stay updated with latest industry trends.

Desired Skills

  • Understanding of distributed and OS agnostic computing technologies.
  • Cloud deployment and hosting technologies.
  • Agile project delivery.
  • Experience with planning software packages such as Microsoft DevOps, Azure Local or Azure IoT Edge.
  • Background in air-gapped or industrial systems.
