Job Overview

Coordinates the design and development of custom products and attachments for existing and new machines to meet customer expectations of performance, quality, cost and delivery. This includes the specialized design of components, systems and attachments. Specialized adaptations for niche markets such as sanitary landfill, wood chip, demolition, material handling, etc.  Functions as a member of the SEST (Sales and Engineering Support Team) in response to distributors request for technical information.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Product Management team  in developing annual market analysis reports for each niche market. Describing in detail the sales results, goals that were achieved, profitability, market trends, competitors actions and a prioritized action plan for the marketing and budget plan for the upcoming year.
  • Coordinate with vendors to develop concept drawings, design parts, components, systems and assemblies utilizing PTC Creo and PTC Windchill.  
  • Discuss, negotiate and resolve specification, design and manufacturing issues with Suppliers, as required.  
  • Understand and accommodate manufacturing capabilities and limitations. Support service and QA departments by working with vendor to determine root cause of problems and developing effective countermeasures.  
  • Evaluate compatibility of Komatsu base machine with third party attachments or special applications with respect to stability, durability and performance. (Sales and Engineering Support Team).  
  • Determine required quality confirmation tests and coordinate with Test Department.  
  • Meet Quality, Cost and Delivery targets established for the project. Utilize continuous improvement techniques to improve quality, reduce cost and lead time, etc.
  •  Support production of prototype development by resolving problems with effective countermeasures and follow-up documentation.  
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Write clear and concise memo’s including drafts of technical documentation such as Parts and Service News and Marketing news, Operator and Shop Manuals, etc. Make presentations during design reviews, etc.  
  • Support sales and marketing by ensuring that products meet customer expectations and by developing special features as required.  
  • Travel to machine worksites to participate in surveys, investigate problems, understand applications, determine customer expectations, install and evaluate countermeasures, etc.  

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BSME or BSEE (or equivalent) degree with a minimum 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in engineering principles including structural mechanics, hydraulics, heat transfer, electricity, ergonomics, etc.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and data management
  • Proficiency in software applications including Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point, as a minimum.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, including international travel.
  • Ability to work closely with Komatsu personnel, customers, distributors and vendors to achieve results.
  • Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the associate is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (life, carry, move) light to medium weights of 1-10 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information.
