Job Overview
The Lead II Engineer will provide advanced project and technical leadership for product development within the Forestry business unit. This role is pivotal in accelerating Full-Tree Logging (FTL) and Cut To Length (CTL) options for product expansion and ensuring alignment with global forestry growth strategies. Responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the engineering activities associated with the design and development and of new projects and maintenance of current products. Oversee teams to ensure project activities are completed within designated QCD targets. Provide technical expertise and guidance to other KAC technical personnel. Approve designs and systems using standard Komatsu quality control methods such as Design Reviews, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis and Design for Manufacturing methodology. Oversee development of reliable and cost-efficient systems that meet the functional specifications and all applicable industry and company standards. Demonstrate experience in leading teams and projects, and in decision making. Interface with our major component suppliers and KLTD development centers.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Lead II Engineers will oversee the full lifecycle of product development. This position requires strong collaboration with diverse teams, partners and customers ensuring shared accountability for driving product innovation, timely launches, and ongoing maintenance.
- Assume project responsibility on assignments by providing planning, technical guidance, and coordination with inside and outside functions, as required to complete the assignment to plan and schedule.
- Provide technical leadership in completing assignments and projects. Demonstrate a high degree of creativity and mature judgement in anticipating and solving non-reoccurring, unprecedented problems.
- Contribute to developing and motivating department personnel.
- Apply a comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge of field experience to the development of new methods, approaches, or procedures with quality and cost effectiveness as a key issue.
- Utilize CAD and PC Programs to develop project plan and to develop design concept drawing, complete assembly drawing, complete component drawing, and complete system drawing for respective vehicle chassis, and/or component, and/or system plus BOM and supporting technical information. Development to meet design compliance to Engineering Standards, Product Quality, Product Cost, and Development Schedule.
- Maintain open communications with internal and external customers and suppliers and provide technical support to meet their expectations (i.e. Manufacturing -Fab-ass'y, Parts, QA, purchasing, procurement, Test, Publications, Service, Sales, Marketing, customers, vendors, management, and collaborative Engineering teams and groups).
- Develop and participate in programs for effective communication of engineering issues to ensure compliance with global standards for design and safety of products and services, as well as engineering best practices.
- Continuous improvement recommendations and implementation of engineering processes used to design, develop, maintain and support components, products, and/or services.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or equivalent relevant discipline from an accredited university.
- 15+ years’ experience in mobile equipment product development. Forestry experience is preferred.
- Proven leadership and expertise in full model developments recognizing the life cycle significance of deliverables which directly and indirectly impact overall business performance.
- Sound knowledge of mobile equipment product development with extensive exposure to structures and related powertrain systems. Forestry, construction and mining backgrounds are ideal candidates.
- Experienced and knowledgeable planning and organizing uniform BOM structures with Sales code configurations consisting or multiple spec variations per marketing requirements.
- Proficient in engineering and business enterprise systems.
- Knowledge of analytical and testing methods, failure and root cause analysis
- Vehicle and Systems Development - Appropriate knowledge in the fields of structural design and testing, Finite Element Analysis, CAD systems, hydraulics, electrical and electronic control systems, operator ergonomics, ISO and N.A. related regulations, and recommended best practices. Serviceability and maintenance preferences and procedures must be considered and incorporated into the designs. Knowledge of domestic and international compliance requirements.
- Electrical Systems - Appropriate knowledge in both standard and advanced aspects of electrical and electronic systems for mobile equipment, encompassing interfaces with controllers, monitors, and a wide range of Komatsu and 3rd party components.
- Hydraulic Systems & Components - Appropriate knowledge in both standard and advanced areas of hydraulic systems and components, including cylinders, valves, pumps, PTO, slewing and travel drives and motors, lubricants, seals, etc.
- Engines and Drive Systems - Appropriate knowledge in the specialized areas of engines and related power module components, drive systems (mechanical, electrical, and/or hydrostatic),

Qualification/Requirements (con't):
- Professional registration and/or membership in committees and/or technical societies, beneficial.
- Knowledge of Global Komatsu standards, Global Komatsu procedures and policies and Global common parts, BOM, SCS and drawing management systems are highly desired.
