Job Overview

The Technical Instructor/Developer is responsible for designing and delivering comprehensive training programs that enhance technical skills and knowledge. This role involves developing curriculum, creating instructional materials, and conducting training sessions for various technical topics. The instructor will also collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the content, while continuously evaluating and improving the training programs to meet the evolving needs of the organization. 

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Develop Training Programs: Instructor/Developers are responsible for developing and delivering training programs that support product initiatives. This includes creating materials, courses, and classes for internal personnel, distribution personnel, end-user customers, and international subsidiaries. (20%) 
  • Conduct Training Sessions: They instruct technical training classes pertaining to internal personnel, subsidiaries, distributors, and end-users. This ensures correct diagnostic procedures, cost-effective, and timely repair and maintenance of equipment. (20%) 
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts: Instructor/Developers collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the content. They continuously evaluate and improve training programs to meet the evolving needs of the organization. (20%) 
  • Evaluate Course Effectiveness: They perform in-depth needs analysis on course effectiveness and revise materials continually as content and approach changes dictate. (20%) 
  • Provide Technical Support: When necessary, provide engineering and service support reviewing schematics, troubleshooting procedures, and testing / adjusting methods for new model development. (10%) 
  • Manage Classroom Aids: Identify, develop and/or procure special tooling, components, and other materials needed to prove a state-of-the-art learning experience. Regularly review tooling and components ensuring resources are up-to-date and relevant to the latest product offerings. (10%) 

Qualifications/Requirements

Education: Associate degree (A.S.) Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), or Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) or bachelor’s degree, EET, Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME) or related military training/combination or work experience. 

 

Experience:  

  • Minimum 3 – 10 years of experience developing / instructing technical training in the field(s) of heavy equipment or mining. 
  • In addition, 3 – 10 years of experience as a heavy equipment technician or service-related work with machine control systems such as mechanical, electrical, air, hydraulic, or computer, is considered a plus. 
  • Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively convey technical information and foster a collaborative learning environment. Ability to provide detailed reports and feedback to service engineers and the manufacturing plants regarding any relevant machine issues from customers. Hands on experience operating CE and/or mining class products. Deep knowledge of the subject matter and the ability to explain complex concepts clearly. Ability to remain calm and flexibility to adjust teaching methods. 

Certifications: Relevant certifications in training and technical service are a plus  

Travel: >50% domestic and international travel.

Product Specific Skills / Knowledge: 

  • Knowledge of Komatsu System engine, hydraulics, electrical, powertrain 
  • Ability to interpret fault codes, use diagnostic tools (e.g., Komatsu’s KOMTRAX or service software), and isolate mechanical/electrical issues. 
  • Proficiency reading service manuals, schematics, and parts diagrams 
  • Experience with tools, measurements, torque specs, and component repair/replacement. 
  • Knowledge of OSHA/MSHA standards and safe maintenance practices around heavy machinery.
