Job Purpose

The Software Engineer II will join the Dispatch 6 Team, responsible for developing and maintaining software that supports real-time mine operations. This role designs, implements, and supports scalable, high-quality solutions for the Dispatch platform while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver customer value. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong software engineering fundamentals, takes ownership of technical solutions, and has the opportunity to grow into a technical leadership role.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality software for the Dispatch 6 platform.
  • Develop scalable backend services and application components following modern software engineering best practices.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of new features and enhancements.
  • Take ownership of features and services throughout their lifecycle, including design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.
  • Troubleshoot, analyze, and resolve complex production issues while improving system reliability, observability, and performance.
  • Monitor and support software in production, proactively identifying opportunities to improve reliability and operational performance.
  • Partner with Product Management, Architecture, QA, DevOps, Support, UX, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable, customer-focused software solutions.
  • Participate in software architecture discussions and contribute to technical design decisions.
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested, and documented code.
  • Perform code reviews and promote engineering best practices.
  • Analyze requirements, estimate development effort, and participate in Agile planning activities.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
  • Identify technical debt and recommend improvements to system architecture, maintainability, and software quality.
  • Share technical knowledge and support the growth of other engineers through collaboration, code reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Develop a strong understanding of Dispatch workflows, mining operations, and Modular's software ecosystem.
  • Participate in customer issue investigations, root cause analysis, and product improvements to enhance product reliability and customer outcomes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in C# and the .NET ecosystem or similar object-oriented programming languages (e.g., C++). Experience with C++ and embedded software development is considered an asset.
  • Experience designing and developing distributed or service-oriented applications.
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented design principles, SOLID principles, and software architecture.
  • Experience developing RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Experience with SQL databases and data modeling.
  • Experience working across the full Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Experience writing automated unit and integration tests.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience working in Agile development environments.

Hard Skills

  • Object-Oriented Software Development: C#, .NET Framework/.NET Core, or similar object-oriented languages (e.g., C++, Java), Object-Oriented Programming, SOLID Principles, Design Patterns.
  • Backend & API Development: REST APIs, HTTP/gRPC, Dependency Injection, JSON/XML Serialization.
  • Database Development: SQL Server, Entity Framework.
  • Distributed Systems: Microservices, Multithreading, Asynchronous Programming.
  • Messaging & Event Processing: RabbitMQ, Kafka, asynchronous messaging concepts.
  • DevOps & CI/CD: Git, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines.
  • Containerization: Docker, Kubernetes.
  • Software Quality & Architecture: Unit Testing, Integration Testing, Performance Optimization, Debugging, Code Reviews, Technical Design.
  • Development Practices: Windows/Linux application development, embedded software concepts, Agile/Scrum.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience developing enterprise-scale or mission-critical applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, and logging tools.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts and distributed system communication.
  • Experience integrating with third-party or enterprise systems.
  • Experience working with real-time, operational, or mission-critical software systems where reliability and availability are essential.
  • Knowledge of mining operations, fleet management, industrial automation, telemetry, or IoT.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives or serving as a technical owner for features or components.

Work Model

This position follows a collaborative work model, working closely with local and global engineering teams. The Software Engineer II partners with Product Management, QA, DevOps, Architecture, Support, and Engineering teams to design, develop, test, deploy, and support high-quality software solutions while contributing to the continuous improvement of the Dispatch platform. The role is expected to demonstrate ownership, accountability, and a continuous improvement mindset while contributing to a collaborative engineering culture.
