The Company

Job Purpose

The Sales Engineer – Automation position combines technical knowledge of mining with sales skills to provide guidance and support as a trusted advisor to Komatsu’s global distributors, sales personnel, and valued customers.  This position typically performs equipment, technology, and application feasibility analyses regarding Komatsu’s complete line of automated mining equipment. This position further supports the Sales Managers in maintaining the opportunity pipeline, developing Total Cost of Ownership models, and preparing commercial proposals.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs common aspects of in-house Komatsu and competitor equipment performance studies. This function can include report generation and presentations in support of sales and marketing efforts. (Time allocated as needed.)
  • Leads most aspects of field studies involving equipment application feasibility and/or performance analyses. Report generation and presentations are typically also a part of these studies. (Up to 50% of time spent.)
  • Participates in the development and improvement of Komatsu’s technical software programs and databases, including tools involving equipment performance, economic analysis, mining methodology, etc. (Time allocated as needed.)
  • Provides support to Komatsu’s mining automation and technology sales and product management efforts including simulation studies, market and competitive analyses, application feasibility input, economic analysis principles, and other related data collection and analysis. (Up to 25% of time spent.)
  • Assists in developing and conducting distributor and customer training exercises and programs. (Time allocated as needed.)
  • Becomes familiar with all Komatsu mining products and applications to better provide support to product and application sales and marketing activities. (Time allocated as needed.)
  • Fluently communicates and demonstrate functions, features, and uses of Komatsu’s automation-related product suite including FrontRunner and Modular applications. (Time allocated as needed.)
  • Assists the Distributor Sales Managers in preparing bids, quotes, and proposals, developing Total Cost of Ownership models, and maintaining the sales opportunity pipeline. (Up to 25% of time spent.)

Required Skills

  • Education required: A BS Mining Engineering (preferred) or Civil Engineering (in conjunction with mining experience) is highly desired. Will consider at least 5 – 7 years’ experience as a mine planner or mine operations lead in lieu of degree.
  • Experience required: 3 – 5 years’ surface mining industry experience is essential, and experience with autonomous haulage systems or teleoperated equipment is a definite plus.
  • Certification required: N/A
  • Travel requirements: Domestic and international travel as required up to 50%.

Desired Skills

  • Mining engineering industry experience and practical surface mining application knowledge are a definite plus.
  • Strong to advanced PC skills required for business applications (Microsoft 365; Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and simulation tools (HAULSIM or similar).
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Multi-lingual is an advantage.
