Job Overview

The Metallurgical Engineer will report to the Thermal Processing Manager in the Technical Services Department reporting to Operations.  The role has technical operations support for internal heat treat processes including neutral hardening, induction hardening, salt bath hardening, and carburizing. 

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Determines appropriate heat treat recipes and creates heat treat process sheets for carburizing (gas and vacuum), normalizing, quench, temper, stress relief, induction hardening, flame hardening, and other associated processes.
  • Prepares and analyzes samples, including case depth and metallography analysis.
  • Participates and supports in failure analysis.
  • Identifies and advises any tooling, gaging, instrumentation, or capital equipment needs for the heat treat facility.
  • Monitors process controls to ensure processes produce quality parts.
  • Maintains and develops heat treat Operating Procedures, Manufacturing Operating Procedures, equipment and process Safety Procedures.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of a 4-year Bachelor of Science Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, or Materials Science Engineering or related field of study.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical and material science principles for a wide range of metals and other materials.
  • Knowledge of the global materials community and standards.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching, and examining microstructures.
  • Experience working in a metallurgical lab environment.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience justifying capital projects.  

Travel Requirements

  • Able to travel to training sessions, suppliers, etc. as required - <10%
