How you will help us create value together:
As an Automation Intern, you will be responsible for a range of support activities for the Shovels Product team. This team focuses on developing, integrating, programming, and enhancing autonomous functionality for large-scale mining equipment. Your responsibilities will include researching technologies, setting up test fixtures with both hardware and software, and assisting the team in introducing new products.
This position will be based onsite at our South Harbor location in Milwaukee’s Harbor District. The target start date for this role is Summer 2025 and has potential to be extended into the Fall 2025 school semester. We offer full-time hours during the summer and flexible part-time hours during the academic year.
Key Job Responsibilities

Enhance your familiarity with robotics, sensors, and/or machine controls.

Support the testing of hardware and software

Collaborate with lead engineers on prototype development assignments.

Utilize your knowledge of electrical wiring diagrams and ability to apply troubleshooting processes to solve problems.

Assist in demonstrating technology readiness to management.
Basic Qualifications
- Pursuing a bachelor's or advanced degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Software, or Mechatronics/Robotics Engineering from an accredited university. Earliest graduation date accepted is December 2025.
- Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or master's level student in good academic standing (3.0 GPA minimum)
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team toward a common goal
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to be creative and resourceful when needed
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with high school FIRST Robotics or robotics at collegiate level

Participation in college robotics teams or competitions.

Interest in pursuing a career in on-road/off-road autonomous machines or vehicles.

Experience with automation and programming software such as LabVIEW, C++, MATLAB, or Python.

Previous internship experience, or hands-on experience in trade work (mechanical repair, electrical work, machine shop work, etc.)
