How you will help us create value together:

As an Automation Intern, you will be responsible for a range of support activities for the Automation Center of Excellence.  The Automation Center of Excellence is responsible for developing next generation technologies for all the mining machines. Activities will include researching technologies, setting up test fixtures with both hardware and software, assisting the Automation team in advancing new products to the mining business units.

This position will be based onsite at our South Harbor location in Milwaukee’s Harbor District! The target start date for this role is Summer 2025 and has potential to be extended into the Fall 2025 school semester. We offer full-time hours during the summer and flexible part-time hours during the academic year if the candidate’s schedule allows for it.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Design prototype parts using Mechanical CAD software (SolidWorks, ProE, Catia, Fusion360).
  • Program automation and embedded systems using languages such as .Net, Java, and Python.
  • Follow directions from lead engineers for prototype development.
  • Interpret electrical wiring diagrams and troubleshoot to resolve issues.
  • Demonstrate technology readiness to management.

Qualifications/Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Software, or Mechatronic/Robotics Engineering, or similar, from an accredited college or university.
  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or master’s level student in good academic standing.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team towards a goal.
  • Excellent organization and personal time management skills, ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess effective problem solving and critical thinking skills; ability to be creative and resourceful when needed.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite products (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with High School FIRST robotics.
  • SAE Autonomous vehicle challenges (Baja, Auto Drive II, Aero Design, Formula).
  • College Robotics teams or Competitions.
  • NASA University Rover Challenge.
  • NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in on/offroad autonomous machines/vehicles.
