Job Overview

The Welder/Fitter (Metal Fabricator) is responsible for making/fitting and repairing parts used in the construction of heavy mining equipment. They lay out, cut and fabricate structural steel, plate and different ferrous and non-ferrous metals based on the product specifications, for example:  aluminum, stainless steel or cast iron.  Ensures quality products are being produced and maintains a safe, clean and productive work environment. Position is based in our Elliot Lake operations.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate trade machinery, such as oxy-fuel cutting torches, grinders, and drills, to bend, punch, cut, and form metal components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Perform calculations and apply shop formulas and other mathematical methods to develop patterns and lay out structural steel. (optional)
  • Plan the sequence of tasks and determine the most efficient methods for cutting steel.
  • Assemble and fit metal sections and plates to form sub-units or complete units used in the assembly process.
  • Fasten components together using tack welding, bolting, and riveting.
  • Use manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal pieces using processes such as gas tungsten arc (TIG or GTAW), gas metal arc (MIG or GMAW), flux-cored arc (FCAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW), and oxy-acetylene (OAW).
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment.
  • Operate metal shaping machines, such as brakes, shears, and other metal straightening and bending machines.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions.
  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating parts or causing warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to achieve the required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Following documented welding work instructions

Qualifications/Requirements

  • College diploma in Welding and Fabrication technician or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Welding and Fitting trade.
  • Canadian Welding Bureau certification is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the use of Jigs & fixtures.
  • Possess a solid understanding of welding equipment and welding accessories.
  • Ability to safely operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment within production facility.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, geometry and their applications in fabrication.
    Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
    Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Ability to read blue prints, drawings, schematics.
  • Good communication skills to work with multi-dimensional team. 
  • Willingness to learn.
